Vintners Daughter review

Hi Lovelies,

Welcome Back! And if you are new here, welcome 💕💕💕

Vintner's Daughter active botanical serum

Vintner's Daugther

If you are interested in green beauty for any length of time, you have most likely heard of Vintner's Daughter serum. I have heard of it too - the first thing that pigued my curiosity was the price of it (at nearly two hundred euros I would have to sell a kidney to get it for god’s sake!) So when the opportunity came to get it in a green beauty swap, I jumped in with both feet, as any other hungry blogger would, and I salivated with anticipation (and stalked my postman like a hawk, mind you!) for a week. The fact that the original owner of it wasn't happy with it didn't do much to deter me, I was so eager to get my paws on it! Side note - I got this from CleanShelf from Instagram, and I highly recommend her as a swapping buddy! She is great.

So anyways, let’s get back to the oil. I got it when it was about 90% full, and I jumped for joy, because who wouldn't?

Let’s see what the description says?

Active Botanical Serum is a 100% active face oil, strategically formulated to have the multi-correctional activity and penetration of a super-powered serum. Made from the world’s most nutrient rich botanicals and essential oils, it is a skincare game changer that restores skin’s balance, texture and natural radiance.
It has all started when the brand owner (and winery owner) April Gargiulo realized that almost all of her highly touted skincare products contained high levels of ineffective, toxic fillers. As she researched more and discovered the cumulative damage these chemicals have on our systems, April sought out toxin free alternatives—trying everything from cult beauty oils to coconut butter. What she found was that many all-natural products ceded activity and results for a smell-good formula. Committed to creating the most active, luxurious serum possible, April began a 2 year-long research and formulation process. Drawing from her experience in fine winemaking, April, alongside natural skincare veterans set out to create a “hero” formulation that would address all of her skincare needs—everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne to elasticity and general radiance. Much like the fine winemaking process, Vintner’s Daughter begins by sourcing the world’s finest raw ingredients and honors these ingredients through an exacting and time-honored formulation process. The result is Active Botanical Serum, a powerful, multi-correctional serum for face that has earned a cult status the world over.

It is made in the unique way, which explains the price point. (extraction from their website)

Vintner’s Daughter was formulated with a singular goal in mind: to create a game-changing product; a 100% active face oil with the multi-correctional activity and penetration of a super powered serum. Inspired by fine winemaking, our formulation process rests on time-honored traditions and exacting methodology. Each ingredient is chosen not only for its individual capabilities, but also how it works in synergy with other ingredients. While other products use timesaving and less expensive extracts, we begin with whole, nutrient dense botanicals. Over the course of weeks, we combine and observe these nutrient-rich plants, ensuring that every drop of our formula is infused with the highest levels of powerful skin renewing agents. We take our commitment to quality a step further by bottling in a dark violet Miron glass that energetically activates our botanical formula even further. The violet colored glass works like a natural filter, only letting the beneficial sunlight in, thus lengthening lifespan and actually increasing potency of our products. This unique packaging works to preserve and enrich our formula.

What about me and my experience with it?

Well, my enthusiasm faded pretty soon, as upon first application I noticed it reacting with my dermatitis patch in a bad way. It went bright red, and to me it is a clear indicator it wasn't suitable for my uber sensitive skin. Nonetheless I tried again and again for a few days aftewards, and the results were the same, my dermatitis patch was irritated and very red. So I did stop using it on that little area, but continued to use it on the whole face. I have to say I wasn't overly impressed with the results, it didn't do anything amazing apart from moisturising my face, and it even didn't do a good job at that I must add, my skin definitely needed more hydration than this. And it was summer when I was using it, when my skin is good and on the normal (rather than dry) side. From what I remember it also sat on my skin if applied on its own, and definitely needed extra product and care to work it into my skin. As you guys know, I always test a product for four to six weeks before giving my two cents on it, and this was no exception - I tried to make it work for six weeks, but I was less and less impressed each day, and finally understood why CleanShelf wanted to swap it - it is just not working for her. Or me. Or three other ladies I passed it on - more on it later.

The final straw that broke camel's back came in the form of small bumps that were appearing on my forehead and fast spreading onto the rest of my face. A quick search revealed it must be an allergy to one or more active ingredient(s) and this is where Vintner’s Daughter and I parted ways. A serum that is not doing it’s job, reacting to dermatitis patch and giving you bumps and skin texture? No thank you!

Do I appreciate all the hard work and the lenghty process of making it the company does? You bet I do! All these people who are making all these natural and amazing products for all of us are my heroes. Do I think this is amazing product? Nope. This product seems to have mixed reviews, people either love and swear by it or hate it. I hate to throw around the word hate, and it takes a lot for me to dislike a product, but I must admit I am not a fan of this product at all. For me it created more problems than it solved, so it wasn't worth keepeing and persevering. The fact that it was passed down to me and and three other ladies who got it from me also didn't like it (their words were stronger than this, but let’s leave it at that) proves it is not only me imagining things. Truth to be told I don't like publishing negative reviews as I don't like trashing products or brands, but at the same time I have to let people know what didn't work for me too. I can't be the girl who likes everything, that is just not possible. This experience proved to me that expensive products don't always equal better products and you don't have to drop a wad of cash to acquire a good product - in fact I got much better results with Pai rosehip oil, which costs like nine times less!

So all in all, this product didn't work out for me, and even if it did, I could never recommend it to people purely for the cost reason - I am sorry but I could never recommend any green beauty item that costs 200 bucks. It is not how I roll, and I stress that great green beauty items can be found at all price points. This serum might be aimed for luxury lovers, who will get nothing less but luxury, but I am not one of those people. In fact the very first product I stumbled upon when I was transitioning (years and years ago) was The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser that cost 50€, and I remember closing the page immediately and thinking to myself “If that's what the green beauty costs, then it is thanks but no thanks!” Eight years later I still haven't tried it. I might be missing on a great product, I don't know, but I simply wouldn't pay over fifty for a face cleanser. Products like these do nothing to dispel a myth that green beauty is utterly expensive. And we should know that isn't the case. I rest my case.

Have you tried this oil? What was your experience with it, hopefully better than mine? Please share, I would love to know!

  1. I literally found this page by googling, "Vinter's Daughter 'didn't do anything'". I had to search so specifically, because 99% of the reviews are GLOWING. Everybody swears by it as a miracle end-all (which is why I bought it in the first place) and I must say I'm very disappointed. It's actually really upsetting that I spent almost $200 on a tiny serum that not only doesn't make the difference it and everybody claims, but caused tiny bumps just like you experienced! And I'm not a person with any allergies or sensitivities, so something's not right with the product. I've tried it several ways; exactly as suggested, used less, used just daytime, just nighttime, applied with the push/press method, rubbed in etc. and it just doesn't work. I've used it about a month, giving it a fair chance but I've seen no positive change-my skin looks exactly the same, just more rough texture and bumps-like I wanted that! And I'm not "purging", I've used green beauty products for years. I just wish there were more reviews like yours, because it would maybe save some people $200 wasted because every readily available review is misleading. Thank you for the review, and I just had to share my own experience as it seems so similar.

    1. Thanks for reading first and foremost! And I am so sorry that it didn't work for you too. Upsetting, especially having in mind you spent so much cash for it. For that price you would definitely expect perfect skin (like they promise) and it is so disappointing when it gives you the exact opposite of results. You definitely gave it a fair shot trying it for a month! I felt I was going against the grain with my review here as I knew majority of the reviews were glowing, but I just had to share my experience too, and I am so glad I did, because a lot of people came forward with similar experiences, and I am glad I am not alone, although I am collectively not happy for all of us. I wish the brand would put out some kind of warning of their website and social media, something like "it might not work for everyone, especially if you have sensitive skin", but no, it is marketed as a miracle product for every skin type. I guess we all will take a lesson here that really expensive products won't equal amazing results? I wouldn't throw it away either, try using it as a body oil - diluting well with some almond or coconut oil? Or try to sell it to get some of the cash back? My blogger pal Organicbeautylover has a marketplace on her website. Take care and thanks for reading and commenting, I appreciate that!

    1. Hi! many thanks for reading! Sadly I didn't go on to research the possible offending ingredients much further - I simply moved on to Bella Aura line, which suits my skin to the T and even helps with my dermatitis, and I haven't looked back. Sorry I can't help you much in pinpointing the offending ingredients in VD serum oil - but I do think it would helpful if you checked them out in EWG and Chemical Of The Day websites.

  3. I had an allergic reaction too. Most other things I've read (and there's not much negative out there) says the citrus oil is to blame. I tried both the essence and serum in tandem but got red blotchy bumpy itchy skin that traveled down my neck too! So bummed.

  4. Thank you for posting. I’m suffering through a terrible reaction to VD as well. Will be tossing it out. Shame for the price and high hopes.
